My name is Kat, I am a survivor of cervical cancer, member of our survivor support group, and I have the privilege of working for The Gynecological Cancer Awareness Project or The GCAP for almost two years now. After you get a cancer diagnosis your life is never the same again as you may have already discovered or may likely discover soon, it takes a lot of patience, support, communicating, and advocating for yourself to make this new journey as smooth as possible. There are a lot of different ways to approach survivorship and what you find works for you is what works for you, this is your journey and it is unique to you.
There are a lot of difficult things about being a survivor, things most people will never understand. This is where The Gynecological Cancer Awareness comes in. We have a team of staff and volunteers that are trained and educated in gynecological cancers, many of which are either survivors themselves or caregivers. There are a lot of different ways to get connected or get help, be sure to check out our programs to see what might interest you. If you have any questions or want to hear stories of other survivors our support group Circles of Hope has been an outlet for a lot of survivors over the past decade, it is full of people who "get it". I look forward to group every month, they have become my survivor family, and I do not know where I would be on my journey without their encouragement, understanding, and advice.
We have direct patient assistance in the form of gas gift cards, grocery gift cards, lodging assistance, and grants for non-medical related expenses. Taking advantage of this when you need it is not something to be ashamed of, we are in the business of removing distress and if we can do that for you we want to. Please be kind to yourself and remember to listen to your body.
Always,
Kat
